Have you ever found yourself wanting to dive into sea kayaking but felt overwhelmed by the choices? If so, you’re not alone. Many newcomers express interest in registering for the Paddle Canada Level 1 course as their starting point. However, this may not be the best choice for everyone. Before you embark on your kayaking journey, it’s important to understand the foundational courses available.

Paddle Canada offers a structured progression of courses: Basic Kayak Skills, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. While advertisements often promote Level 1 as the starting point, Paddle Canada’s guidelines state otherwise. The Basic Kayak Skills course is designed to be the primary entry point, focusing on essential techniques that encourage safe paddling in calm, sheltered waters.

This course has no prerequisites, making it accessible to beginners. It aims to build confidence and foundational skills, allowing participants to paddle safely in Class 0 waters alongside peers. In contrast, enrolling in a Level 1 course requires prior certification from the Basic Kayak Skills course or equivalent experience, as assessed by the course director. Prospective Level 1 students must also have completed at least five kayaking excursions and demonstrate specific skills such as controlled wet exits and assisted re-entries.

The difference in outcomes between these two courses is significant. The Basic Kayak Skills course lays a solid foundation, while the Level 1 course builds upon that foundation to foster greater independence, judgment, and leadership on the water.

To help you start your kayaking journey the right way, here are several options to consider based on your current skill level, time commitment, and budget.

Take a Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills One-Day Course

It really is that simple. If you have little to no paddling experience or formal knowledge, this is where you should begin. Paddle Canada’s website lists all registered courses across the country. You can search for a course near you here: https://paddlecanada.com/search-for-a-sea-kayak-course/

Once you find a suitable option, contact the course director or instructor directly to register. This is the most cost-effective and time-efficient way to get started.

There is no time restriction on when you can move on to a Level 1 course. However, I strongly recommend paddling more with friends, building confidence in your abilities, and gaining experience before progressing to Level 1.

Join a Basic Skills Clinic

If you already have some kayaking experience but do not hold any certification, joining a Basic Skills Clinic is an excellent option. Many organizations across the country offer weekly or seasonal clinics that allow paddlers to build skills gradually in a supportive group environment.

For example, East Coast Outfitters offers a Basic Skills Clinic every Monday throughout the season from 6–8 p.m. Led by a Paddle Canada instructor, this clinic is a great way to ease into certification while allowing your skills to develop over time. We focus on refining technique, building knowledge, and increasing confidence. When both the instructor and participant feel ready, we can begin developing Level 1 skills.

Depending on your goals, we can work through a clear progression over the course of the season to ensure they are met. This option is also ideal for paddlers who have completed a Basic Kayak Skills course and want more practice before enrolling in Level 1. This approach typically costs more and requires a greater time commitment, but I consistently see excellent long-term skill development when paddlers learn this way.

If you can’t commit to a full season, attending one or two sessions still provides value. An instructor can assess your skills and knowledge and recommend whether you should begin with a Basic course or are ready to move directly into a Level 1 course.

Join a Paddle Club

If you have considerable sea kayaking experience but lack formal certification, joining a paddling club can be a great pathway. Clubs across the country offer regular group paddles and skill development opportunities.

East Coast Outfitters runs a Paddling Club every Tuesday evening from 6–8 p.m. Joining this group provides flexibility and multiple learning options.

If you’re eager to take a course but unsure where to start, attending a few club sessions allows an instructor to assess key skills such as wet exits, re-entries, overall paddling technique, and decision-making. From there, they can recommend the most appropriate course. This approach generally requires less time and is more affordable.

Staying with the club throughout the season—similar to the Basic Clinics—allows for gradual skill development under instructor guidance. In my experience, this longer-term approach produces the strongest results. Within a single season, paddlers can fine-tune the skills required for Level 1 certification. This option does require more time and carries higher overall costs.

These recommendations are not the only ways to gain Paddle Canada certification. Paddling with friends who are instructors, or with experienced paddlers who have completed skills courses, can also be valuable. The key objective for instructors is to ensure skills are taught in proper progression. Every paddler is different, and training should reflect those differences.

The Basic Kayak Skills course is a flatwater program, while Level 1 is a sea kayaking program. Our role as instructors is to properly assess where each participant should begin so they can learn safely, confidently, and successfully.

Choosing the right starting point in sea kayaking or any type of paddling isn’t about rushing into the highest certification—it’s about building skills safely, confidently, and in the right order. Whether you begin with a one-day Basic Kayak Skills course, a weekly clinic, or a paddling club, the goal is the same: strong foundations that lead to enjoyable and safe experiences on the water. When paddlers progress at a pace that matches their experience and commitment, they not only gain certification more easily, but they also become better, more confident kayakers for the long term.
